How we learn

Every day at Avalon Beach House Preschool is filled with play, learning, and real-world adventures. We follow children’s curiosity, nurture their friendships, and gently guide their growth so they feel safe, confident, and ready to take on the world.

Mixed-age learning

Children of different ages learn and play side by side just like they would in a family. Younger ones gain confidence by watching older peers, while older children build empathy and leadership by guiding and helping others. This kind of mixed-age play builds strong bonds, encourages language and imagination, and nurtures each child’s sense of belonging. Our educators tailor experiences to meet each child where they are, offering just the right balance of challenge and support.

Emotional development

We help children name and understand their feelings, using tools like the Zones of Regulation to build emotional awareness and self-regulation skills. Through daily moments, gentle guidance, and intentional teaching, they learn to recognise body language, express themselves clearly, and tune into others with empathy. When children feel safe, heard, and connected to those around them, they grow into kind, confident learners—ready to build strong relationships and navigate the world with resilience and care.

Nature pedagogy

Nature is at the heart of how children learn. With the beach and natural spaces just steps away, we explore the outdoors, use field guides to identify insects and birds, and spark curiosity through discovery. Indoors, natural materials inspire art, creativity, and sensory play. These experiences build a deep connection to the environment, encouraging respect, wonder, and a lifelong love of learning rooted in nature, play, and the world around them.

School readiness

We support our oldest children as they prepare for the big step into school, with a focus on confidence, connection, and capability. Through play and real-life experiences, children build strong social skills like asking for help, managing emotions, and working with others. We nurture early literacy and numeracy through meaningful activities like writing their name, exploring numbers, and expanding vocabulary. Fine motor skills grow through drawing, painting, and threading; while climbing, running, and playing outdoors strengthen growing bodies. Visits to Avalon Public and Maria Regina schools help children feel comfortable and confident about what’s ahead.

Community exploration

Outings are a treasured part of our week. Small groups of children set off on local adventures to the beach, creek, parks, or nearby shops, where learning comes to life in the real world. Along the way, they practise road safety, greet neighbours, notice the environment, and even lend a hand with litter picks. These walks build confidence, spark conversation, and deepen their sense of belonging. Whether it’s spotting ducks in the creek or visiting the local grocer, every outing is a chance to explore, connect, and care for the world around them.

A day at Avalon Beach

Our day follows a gentle rhythm – structured enough to feel safe, flexible enough to follow each child’s lead.

Free play & morning circle

The day begins with a welcoming space for free play. We then gather together to acknowledge Indigenous culture, share stories, and set a joyful tone for the day.

Morning tea & emotional check-in

A nourishing snack and gentle chats help children tune into how they’re feeling, supported by the Zones of Regulation.

Learning through play

Children explore, create, and learn supported by our educators through both guided and self-directed activities.

Progressive lunch

Children are invited to eat in smaller groups, helping them stay in tune with their own needs and routines.

Rest & quiet time

Whether it’s a nap, a book, or some quiet play, children take the time they need to recharge at their own pace.

Afternoon play & projects

Hands-on experiences continue with small group activities, open-ended play, storytelling, and exploration.

Wind down & pick-up

The day ends gently, with calming play and connection as children get ready to head home.
